Police respond to tractor trailer fire on I-90 in the town of Newstead

Press Release

On June 27, 2025, at approximately 7:54 p.m., State Police were called to I-90 westbound in the town of Newstead for a report of a tractor trailer fire.

An investigation determined that a tractor trailer hauling plastic foam board, driven by Mohamed G. Salad, 66, of Ontario, Canada, was traveling westbound on I-90 near mile marker 410.5 when the trailer caught on fire and Salad pulled over onto the shoulder of the road.

During the investigation and after interviewing Salad, it was determined that the fire was potentially caused by break malfunction or failure.

Both lanes were closed for a period time causing a backup of approximately three miles initially.

At approximately 9:10 p.m., the fire was extinguished, and the left lane was re-opened with a backup of approximately five miles and traffic was able to safely pass in the left lane.

The incident was cleared shortly after 1:30 a.m., and all lanes were reopened after cleanup and removal of the trailer.

A traffic diversion was determined not necessary based on the assessment of the situation at the time by personnel on scene and the quick response of the local fire department.

There were no injuries reported.
