Tahawus stands out as a unique example of a "ghost" town, as it doesn't just sit abandoned, but has vanished entirely. Established in the early 1940s as a mining community, Tahawus was a bustling hub for families, miners, a school, a fire department, and various entertainment venues. However, after 23 years, it was revealed that the very ground beneath the town was rich in iron and titanium, the minerals the town was built to extract. As a result, the entire town was relocated 12 miles away, with 87 houses, two churches, a store, and five apartment buildings being moved to a new location. The remnants of Tahawus now leave only a haunting impression of a once vibrant community, with its past life preserved in the eerie footprint it left behind.
