On August 9, 2024, State Police received a phone call from the Herkimer County Humane Society reporting a possible animal cruelty case.
A preliminary investigation revealed a dog was tied up by a leash to the door of the Herkimer County Humane Society and left out in the rain on August 8, 2024, at about 11:00 p.m.
Following an investigation, Troopers arrested Pedro A. Aquino, age 39, from West Winfield, NY, for NYS Agricultural & Markets Law § 353-a Animal Cruelty, a class “A” misdemeanor.
Aquino was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the town of German Flatts Court on September 3, 2024, at 3:00 p.m.
According to a Facebook post by Herkimer County Humane Society - "Pedro Alexis “Lex” Aquino age 39, from West Winfield, NY has been arrested for the crime of Animal Cruelty in the case of the dog, Betty/Bailey, a 1 1/2-year-old Bulldog/Pit mixed breed dog who had given birth 11 weeks earlier, then left tied to the shelter door in the night and passed away shortly after.
