Police arrest three in Capital Region check scam investigation

PRESS RELEASE

On November 15, 2023, the State Police of Latham arrested Jahquel S. Robertson, 28, of Troy, NY, for

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the third degree

  • Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the first degree

  • Two counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the second degree

  • Forgery in the first-degree

  • Attempted Grand Larceny in the third-degree

  • Conspiracy in the fifth degree

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the seventh degree

  • Two counts of Petit Larceny

Anisa M. Figueroa, 29, of Troy, NY, was arrested for

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the third degree

  • Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the first degree

  • Attempted Grand Larceny in the third-degree

  • Conspiracy in the fifth degree

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the seventh degree

Erik Aponte Ortiz Jr., 30, of Albany, NY, was arrested for

  • Four counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the second degree

  • Three counts of attempted Grand Larceny in the third-degree

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the seventh degree

The continued inquiry into a forged check investigation that originated in March 2023 has led to additional arrests. The investigation witnessed Aponte Ortiz Jr. being provided a forged check by Robertson and Figueroa for the reported purpose of cashing at a financial institution in East Greenbush, NY. Investigators intercepted Aponte Ortiz Jr., and while being taken into custody, the forged check was seized and he was found to possess a controlled substance. Following that arrest, Robertson and Figueroa were stopped in a vehicle together on I-787 in Colonie, NY, and were taken into custody. Multiple additional fraudulent checks were discovered within their vehicle.

Following the arrest of Robertson and Figueroa, a search warrant was executed at the home they shared in Troy, NY. The search of the house discovered check-generating equipment, controlled substances along with other illicit drug packaging materials, and multiple debit cards named to other individuals.

All three were transported to and processed at SP Latham. Erik Aponte Ortiz Jr. was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the East Greenbush Town Court on November 30, 2023, and released. Robertson and Figueroa were arraigned at the Troy City Court and released under the supervision of the Rensselaer County Probation Department. Robertson was also issued appearance tickets returnable to the Colonie and Rotterdam Town Courts at a later date.
