Verona NY Man Accused of Strangling Victim, Pointing Gun During Domestic Dispute With Children Present

According to Oneida County Sheriff, Robert Maciol, a Verona man was arrested following the report of a domestic incident.Â
On August 30, 2025, Road Patrol Deputies took a report of a physical domestic incident. Due to the nature of the case, the case was turned over to the Domestic Violence Unit for further investigation.Â
It was learned that during a physical domestic incident, the suspect, Andrew J. Helmer, pointed a long gun at the victim and also choked her until she lost consciousness. It was also reported that this occurred while there were 3 children present. Â
During the investigation it was learned that the subject was currently named on a order of protection related to a different person, which prohibits him from possessing firearms. Â
An extreme risk order was sought and granted, allowing all firearms inside the home to be seized at that time.Â
Ultimately, Helmer was charged with Criminal Possession of a weapon 3rd, Strangulation 2nd, and 3 counts of Endangering the welfare of a minor.Â
