HANCOCK, NY — A Fourth of July celebration turned tragic in Delaware County when a fireworks accident resulted in one fatality and another person injured on Somerset Lake.
On July 4, 2025, at approximately 9:40 p.m., New York State Police at Deposit were dispatched by the Delaware County 911 Center to the area of Ridge Runner Road in the town of Hancock following reports of an accident involving fireworks.
According to a preliminary investigation, two males were on a pontoon boat on Somerset Lake setting off fireworks when an unexpected malfunction occurred. Authorities believe that multiple fireworks ignited simultaneously, causing a violent explosion aboard the vessel.
One of the individuals on the boat was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the explosion. The second male was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The New York State Police were assisted on the scene by the Hancock Fire Department, Hancock EMS, and other local emergency services.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved as the investigation continues. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
